It is fantastic to see the Plaid Cymru Conference (taking place at Llangollen) unanimously backing a motion in support of funding for the Cornish language. As a long-standing member of Plaid - going back to my college days in Lampeter - I am once again delighted to see the Party of Wales support for Cornwall and its culture.
What a massive contrast to the MPs which represent Cornwall at Westminster and have failed to oppose cuts to the language funding or battle against the imposition of a Devonwall seat.
I was quite disappointed with the response I received from Sarah Newton MP.
ReplyDeleteShe effectively said it was something to take up with the Boundary Commission, in their consultation online and at the public hearing in Truro in November. However this ignores the fact that this is inevitable if the Commission is to follow the rules that have been set for it by the legislation.
It is not possible to create an integer number of constituencies covering Cornwall and Scilly under the rules that they were working to.
According to the documents available at the Boundary Commission for England and Cornwall's website there is an electorate of 392223 in Cornwall and 1651 in the Isles of Scilly.
The required size of constituencies is "no fewer than 71,031 and no more than 78,507".
Therefore 5 constituencies covering Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly would have an average of 78774.8 electors, and 6 would have an average of 65645.667 electors.
It would be possible to create 5 constituencies out of Cornwall alone, which would have an average of 78444.6 voters, which just about fits within the range. It would then be necessary to put the Isles of Scilly in another constituency.
